Adjust Page Brightness - Dimly ("the extension") is built to work with as little data as possible. This page explains, in plain language, what the extension does and doesn't do with your information.
The short version
- We do not collect, sell, or transmit any of your personal data or browsing history.
- All of your settings are stored locally in your browser, using Chrome's built-in storage.
- If you enable sunrise/sunset auto mode, your location is used only on your own device to calculate sunrise and sunset times, and is never sent to us or to any third party.
- The extension has no analytics, no advertising, and no external servers involved in its normal operation.
What's stored, and where
The extension stores the following in Chrome's local storage on your own device, using the storage permission. None of it leaves your browser:
- Your brightness settings, both global and per-site
- Auto Brightness and sunrise/sunset preferences
- Night mode filter color
- Usage statistics you generate by using the extension (which you can export or clear at any time)
- Your coordinates, only if you turn on sunrise/sunset auto mode — used solely for the on-device sunrise/sunset calculation described below
Location data
If you choose to enable the "Sunrise / sunset" auto mode, the extension asks your browser for a one-time location reading, using the standard geolocation Web API. That coordinate is:
- Used only to calculate today's sunrise and sunset time, with a public, offline astronomical formula (NOAA's solar position equations) that runs entirely on your device
- Never sent to any server, including ours — there is no server in this feature at all
- Stored locally so the extension can recompute the times once a day without asking again
You can turn this off at any time by switching back to manual times in the popup, which also removes the stored coordinates from use.
Permissions we request, and why
| Permission | Why it's needed |
|---|---|
storage | Save your brightness settings, site list, and preferences locally in your browser. |
tabs | Detect the site you're on so per-site settings and the day/night schedule can be applied to the right tab. |
commands | Power the optional keyboard shortcuts for adjusting brightness without opening the popup. |
contextMenus | Add the right-click option to quickly add the current site to your managed list. |
notifications | Show small, local confirmations for certain in-extension actions. |
alarms | Recompute sunrise/sunset times once a day when auto mode is on, since they shift slightly every day. |
geolocation | Read your coordinates once, on-device, to calculate sunrise/sunset — only requested if you turn this feature on. See "Location data" above. |
Third-party services
The extension does not use any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services. It makes no network requests as part of its normal operation — brightness control and sunrise/sunset calculations both happen entirely on your device.
Children's privacy
The extension is a general-purpose browser tool and does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children, because it does not collect information from anyone at all.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will be updated accordingly. Significant changes will also be noted in the extension's Chrome Web Store listing.
